Suggestions for Lent

Create a Prayer Space in our homes with a Crucifix or the image of Christ Crucified at the centre and remember each day all those who carry heavy burdens at this time.  Further ideas on how to create such a space are to be found on this link:  https://www.derrydiocese.org/news/categories/lent-2021

This link will also provide you with many other worthwhile resources for a prayerful and meaningful Lent.

As it’s not possible to safely distribute Trócaire Boxes at this time to everyone, we suggest that you create your own Trócaire Box or Jar and place it somewhere for all to see as a reminder of daily blessing and the need to give to those much less fortunate than ourselves.

COOLCALM AND KEENAUGHT OPEN FOR PRIVATE PRAYER

St. Mary’s, Coolcalm, will be open for private prayer and to light candles this week on Monday and Wednesday from 11 am to 2 pm.

St. Patrick’s, Keenaught, will be open for private prayer and to light candles this week on Thursday from 11 am to 2 pm.

Please, you must wear a face covering while entering and leaving the church.  When you call into the church please pick up a coloured card at the door on the way to your seat.  When you have finished praying please leave the card behind on your seat.  That seat will be cleaned later in the day.  Do not sit on a seat where a card has been left behind.  Thank you.

‘LIVING CHRISTIAN FAITH’ LENTEN CONVERSATIONS ONLINE AT KNOCK SHRINE

Knock Shrine is launching a new series of online discussions to engage you during Lent.  What nurtures our faith and what challenges it today?  Where do we find hope and joy in our lives?  How can our faith build mental strength, wellbeing and resilience?  How has the Covid pandemic impacted upon our faith?  These are just some of the questions that will be explored over the 6 weeks of Lent during a new series of online discussions on the topic of ‘Living Christian Faith’.  Faith Renewal at Knock Shrine is all about reaching out to people.  This will open a conversation on contemporary issues of faith and church life.

Chaired by Fr. Eamonn Conway DD, Priest in Tuam diocese and Professor of Theology at Mary Immaculate College, the conversations will explore a different theme each week and guest speakers will discuss some of the important questions we all face in living out our faith.  The discussions will be streamed online via the Knock Shrine website at www.knockshrine.ie/watch-live  and on Facebook @knockshrine, offering people from all over the world the opportunity to engage in relevant topics and to hear from a range of people, from those in public life such as Baroness Nuala O’Loan and Senator Ronan Mullen to groups of young teachers and members of the clergy.

Thursday 25th February – ‘Living Christian Faith as Young Adults’

A group of young Irish adults, for whom Christian Faith is of great importance, will discuss the strength it gives them and how we can better communicate the joy of the Gospel today.

Thursday 4th March – ‘Living Christian Faith in the Classroom as Young Teachers’

Three recently qualified primary teachers explain how their religious faith is important to them and how it influences their work as teachers in the classroom.

Thursday 11th March – ‘Living Christian Faith in Public Life’

Baroness Nuala O’Loan and Senator Ronan Mullen discuss their own faith, how it informs their public service and the challenges people of faith encounter in the public sphere today.

Thursday 18th March – ‘Proclaiming Christian Faith as a priest or religious today’

Sr. Ursula Lawler, lecturer in Christian Ethics at Mary Immaculate College, returned missionary and editor of the Africa Magazine, Fr. Sean Deegan SPS; Ballyhaunis Parish Priest Stephen Farragher and Fr. Eamonn Conway will discuss living priesthood and religious life today in conversation with young Irish Catholic journalist Jason Osbourne.

Thursday 25th March – ‘Studying Christian Faith’

Dr. Máire Campbell is assistant principal of a primary school in North Dublin, Judith King is an internationally recognised psychotherapist and Margaret Naughton is a busy hospital chaplain.  Yet they have all found time to fulfil their passion of doing a PhD in theological studies.  They share with us how their theological studies enrich their faith and their work.

The talks will be streamed at 8.30 pm every Thursday during Lent.  Join us at www.knockshrine.ie/watch-live or on Facebook @knockshrine

STRESS CONTROL ONLINE

Stress is a normal reaction to the rapidly changing and uncertain times we are all living in at the moment.  If you are feeling a bit more stressed than usual and would like to learn some great ways, free-of-charge, to deal with common problems like anxiety, depression, panicky feelings, poor sleep and poor wellbeing then come along to our online Stress Control class.  ‘Stress Control’ is a six-session cognitive-behavioural therapy class used extensively in community-settings by the NHS (UK) and HSE (Ireland) and across the world.  You can find out more here: https://ni.stresscontrol.org/

As you can’t come to a regular Stress Control class due to the current circumstances, Stress Control will come to you and live stream the sessions.  Each session will be available on the YouTube channel from 9 am and will be 62 hours after the start time.  The sessions will be led by Dr. Jim White, consultant clinical psychologist, who created the class and who has taught most of the NHS (UK) and HSE (Ireland) trainers who would normally be running classes across the country.

To take part:

  1. Go to https://ni.stresscontrol.org/ where you can learn more about the class and get the dates. Everything you need to successfully complete the class – the booklets, self-assessment, relaxation and mindfulness – can be found in the ‘Free zone’.  If you can, please read, and start working on, the booklets in the ‘Preparing for the course’ section before Session 1.

  1. On the homepage, click on the ‘Stress Control Online’ link to access our YouTube channel where the classes will be available to view at the scheduled times. If you click the ‘Subscribe’ button on our YouTube page (free), you will receive notifications when a new session is available.  You can also follow this link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdCfzKgmXbB30baWLv6L5-g

  1. The session will begin exactly on time, so make sure you are there from the start. Sessions run for about 90 minutes and there will be a 10-minute break in the middle.

  1. Each session is one piece of the jigsaw in tackling your Stress. By coming to each class, the jigsaw will form, and the big picture can emerge, making you better able to handle your stress.  This is cognitive-behavioural therapy so it is crucial you practice the skills you will learn between sessions.

Life is very hard for us just now and there are no easy solutions or magic cures, but, with hard work and determination, we can boost our resilience to cope with these difficult times and come out the other end stronger. Please pass this on to anyone who you think might benefit from the class.
